Ann Blyth in THE KING'S THIEF (1955)

Ann Blyth plays the daughter of a persecuted nobleman after the rise of Charles II in England in The King's Thief (1955), and she's out to find out what happened to her father and confront the evil fellow responsible - played by David Niven.  You can watch it today on Turner Classic Movies - 4:30 pm. ET.

Ann is reunited with Edmund Purdom, who starred with her in The Student Prince (1954). George Sanders plays the lusty Charles II in this extravagant historical adventure, and look for a young and dashing Roger Moore early in his career.

Ann Blyth and Edmund Purdom between scenes in The Student Prince (1954)

This is a candid shot between scenes with Ann Blyth and newcomer Edmund Purdom in The Student Prince (1954).  From my book Ann Blyth: Actress. Singer. Star. -- Purdom recalls the influence she had on him:

Purdom’s opinions of Ann Blyth are quoted in an issue of Movie Secrets from 1955:

He said, a long time ago, that Ann Blyth was the only actress he’d worked with in Hollywood who seemed to know exactly what she was doing, and why… “She’s one of the most wonderful people, and one of the few really good people, I have ever known.”

You can watch The Student Prince this afternoon on TCM.

Ann Stars in The Student Prince tonight on TCM

Ann Blyth starred in the musical The Student Prince (1954) with Edmund Purdom, who famously, or infamously, lip-synched to Mario Lanza's signing voice.  Lanza was originally paired with Ann, but fights with the studio left him out of the picture, except for his previously recorded vocal track.  The lavish movie was filmed in color, despite the black and white press photo above of Ann and Purdom.  It can be seen tonight on Turner Classic Movies at 11:15 p.m. ET.

For more on the movie, and its background controversy, have a look at this post on my Another Old Movie Blog, or my book, Ann Blyth: Actress. Singer. Star. in eBook, paperback, or audiobook.

The King's Thief - on TCM!

Ann Blyth and David Niven gamble over high stakes in the aftermath of the English Civil War in The King's Thief (1955).  The swashbuckling adventure features Edmund Purdom, George Sanders, and the late Roger Moore.  Turner Classic Movies will show the movie this Friday, June 2nd, at 5 p.m. ET.

From Ann Blyth: Actress. Singer. Star. -

Ann Blyth plays the daughter of one such discredited nobleman, who has lived in exile in France.  Now that the war is done, she’s eager to return to England, but is shocked and heartbroken when her father’s friend comes to tell her the news that Niven has put her father to death.  Though told she must never return to England now, nevertheless, Ann is a feisty gentlewoman.  She’s heading back to find out what happened to her father and confront this David Niven fellow.

For more on the movie, have a look at this post on my Another Old Movie Blog.

The Student Prince - today on TCM

The Student Prince (1954) was meant to reunite Ann Blyth on screen with Mario Lanza, but only Lanza's voice was used for the musical soundtrack; his role was played by Edmund Purdom.  From my book, Ann Blyth: Actress. Singer. Star.:

Ralph Moratz, recounts his experience as a movie extra playing one of the students in The Student Prince:

I was in constant awe working so closely with this charming, beautiful, friendly actress.  She treated all of us as equals, joking, talking and enjoying our company as we enjoyed hers.  To this day I can recall the good feelings on that set just because Ann Blyth made it that way.

What a joyous delightful welcome for me into the fairytale land of the 1950s major studios.

Like everyone on the set, I fell in love with that talented young lady, Ann Blyth and still cherish the image of her coming out of the double doors leading to the beer garden with steins swinging in the air.
Can’t remember how many takes for that scene alone but her stamina was amazing.

The Student Prince airs on Turner Classic Movies today at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.  I hope you can see it.
